KEEP IT MOVING

On Safari you see that each pack, pride, flock or herd in the bush is in constant movement. They are either looking for food or trying their best not to get eaten. If they stay in one place for too long, they die. As they move, they change according to their environment. The lions in the Serengeti cannot climb trees but the lions in the jungle learned how to do so. The wildebeasts by the lake are lighter colored as it serves as better camouflage.

This is actually a pretty accurate metaphor for life. If you don’t move, if you don’t explore, if you don’t keep going, if you don’t change, if you don’t adapt - a part of you dies. Stagnation can kill.

We were having a conversation with our ranger/ safari guide about how he notices that his culture is changing. Many tribes are doing their best to preserve their traditions and ways of life but sometimes struggle to see that some of their customs don’t really fit in the modern world. (ie, polygamy, hunting endangered animals, marriage at a young age, etc.) Although humans are thought to be the “superior species” we really have a poor ability to adapt. To change our minds. To be ok with not being right. To not just do something because “that’s the way we’ve always done it.”

It’s a very fine line between honoring history and learning to adapt and change with our changing surroundings. The “right to bear arms” was a privilege that was given to the American people a long time ago. Things have changed. Surroundings have changed. People have drastically changed. Because of this laws need to adapt and change as the people do. We as a culture need to realize that if we do not change and adapt then people will continue to die.

We all have the ability to change. We can change our bodies and we can change our minds. If we look closely enough we will see that the world around us is in a constant state of change. Things change but the question is: will you be willing to change?
